Significance of Dhanteras in Deepawali Celebrations

Dhanteras is one of the important festivals and indicates the beginning of the Deepawali festival, which is celebrated for five days in India. Dhanteras is being celebrated on 13th day of the Krishna Paksh in the Ashwin month according to the traditional Hindu Calendar.

As a matter of fact, the word Dhanteras is combination of two different words i.e. “Dhan" meaning wealth and "Teras" that is considered to be the 13th day (Trayodashi) according to Hindu Calendar. The other name of Dhanteras is Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Dhanteras marks the commencement of Deepawali celebrations across the country.

People worship Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda and health along with Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth on this day. This is believed that purchasing the articles made of Gold, Silver and even new utensils on this auspicious day brings good fortune and wealth in their homes. This is said that the more wealth we spend on the day of Dhanteras, the more abundance it will bring to our home. Many people believe this day to be auspicious for purchasing vehicles and electronic gadgets, beginning of new shop or office premise, business and ventures. Both commercial and residential places are decorated which marks the beginning of prosperity and abundance.

Another significant aspect of Dhanteras is that people light diyas/candles in the evening time on this day in order to attract positive energies into the house and ward off negative energy and evil spirits from house. In fact, this festival symbolizes the prayer for health, wealth and happiness while spreading light in one's life.
