“BuddhamSaranamGacchami”. Let us take refuge in Lord Buddha, and what would be a more auspicious day to honour Buddha and follow his teachings than the day of Buddha Purnima itself, which is going to be celebrated on May 12, this year.
Buddha Purnima, also known by the name Buddha Jayanti, is a significant day for the devotees of Mahatma Buddha all over the world. This festival of Veshak Purnima is a remarkable remembrance of Gautam Buddha's birth, enlightenment and nirvana, the three pivotal occurrences of the life of Mahatma Buddha.
Gautam Buddha was born in the royal family of King Suddhodana. Although Buddha led a princely life, he found no satisfaction in worldly pleasures and materialistic comforts. The turning point in Buddha's life came when he saw human sufferings like old age, sickness, and a funeral procession. Buddha was so moved to witness the agonies of mankind that he relinquished his palace and started his journey to know the true purpose of human life and to find the root cause of human sorrows.
After a long, rigorous practice and meditating in a secluded environment, away from the frequent disturbances of the world, Lord Buddha got enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Thereafter, Buddha kindled the spirit of mankind through his pragmatic teachings. He taught the world how to remain unaffected amidst miseries and sufferings through detachment from desires. His doctrine of the middle way guides human beings to uphold a balanced life. This principle enforces the practice of spiritualism with right understanding, denying extreme indulgence and extreme self-denial. It also guides one to cultivate both the qualities of wisdom and compassion in our inner being to attain a peaceful state like that of Buddha.
To commemorate the life and teachings of Mahatma Buddha, people gather in monasteries to offer their prayers, chant mantras and sit in meditation to achieve peace and harmony in their lives. To make the festival of Buddha Purnima more fulfilling, people offer alms to the less fortunate, following the charitable practices that Buddha taught to the world at large.
Now, when the whole atmosphere is panicked by the terrors of unruled entities, the teachings of peace, compassion and non-violence of Lord Buddha become more proclaiming. So, let us walk together on the right path shown by Mahatma Buddha and make our life peaceful, more meaningful and elevated on this Buddha Purnima.
With warm regards
