Ganga Dussehra, one of the most sacred festivals of Hindus is marked with reverence of Maa Ganga, is celebrated on the tenth day (dashmi tithi) of waxing moon (Shukla Paksh) in the month of Jyeshtha as per Hindu calendar. This auspicious day will fall on 16 June 2024 this year.
Ganga Dussehra, also known as Gangavataran, means the ‘Descent of Maa Ganga’ from Heaven to Earth.
The legend behind Ganga Dussehra goes round the King Bhagirath, who, by his intense penance accomplished his mission to bring Maa Ganga to earth in the form of a river to free the cursed souls of his ancestors.
On this holy day, thousands of devotees gather on the bank of the river Ganga in the cities of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi and Prayag Raj. They offer prayers, perform rituals and also light diyas and lamps to worship Maa Ganga.
