Holika had a boon to remain unharmed by fire, so she took Prahlad by her side amidst the fire to burn him alive. But on the contrary, Prahlad was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu and Holika was burnt to ashes. The festival also prominently reminds of the profound love of Krishna and Radha. Krishna once complained to MaaYashoda for his dark colour by comparing it with the fair complexion of Radha. On the playful suggestion of Yashoda, Krishna applied colour on Radha's face to make both of them have similar skin tone. Later it became a custom to sprinkle colour on the near and dear ones as a mark of unity, togetherness and equality.
