Calculate the Fat

Fat content of any food is easy to calculate if you know total calories and fat content in grams. In scientific terms, calorie is a unit of measurement of amount of heat it takes to raise temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

Each gram of fat contains about 9 calories. Each gram of protein and carbohydrate contains about 4 calories. On a hot dog package, label may say that each frank has 170 calories, from 7 grams of protein, 1 gram of carbohydrate and 15 grams of fat.

Multiply 15 grams of fat by 9 (calories per gram of fat). Result shows that 135 calories come from fat.

Then divide total calories, which are 170, into fat calories, which are 135. The result is 0.79.

Multiply by 100. Answer reveals that 79 percent of calories in frank come from fat.
