On the philosophical side Vedas expound six schools of thought that enquire into the mystery of being, creation and the existence of Absolute Reality, they are: the investigative system, atomic theory, logic, empirical analysis, science of eternal soul and Brahman or the non-dual transcendental substance of Reality and Absolute Beauty. In a word, Vedas were given to us by the Supreme Creator as a guide to gradually elevate our state of consciousness. A system of knowledge can only then be considered complete and scientific when it takes cognition of both the nominal and phenomenal. Hence, the Vedas are also known as 'wish-fulfilling desire tree', meaning that with whatever desire one consults the Vedas she/he will receive encouragement and practical advice towards achieving its fulfillment. The tree of the Vedas sprouted from the sacred seed syllable 'Aum'. Aum has many meanings; one of them is 'yes'. In response to the human being’s search for higher, divine goals, self discovery or knowledge of the universe, the Vedas vehemently proclaim in the affirmative, yes, Aum! What you are searching after is here, probe deeper. The knowledge presented therein is profound. It is given to us to understand the purpose and significance of human birth. It tells us that we are not born to suffer. It elucidates that immortality and eternal happiness are our birth right being intrinsic to our original spiritual nature.

Many suffer from the misconception that the Yoga system is a part of the Hindu religion and its practice is limited within such narrow confines. This is far from true. The union which is achieved through the practice of yoga is a spiritual union of the individual, of the eternal self with the eternal, transcendental Supreme Godhead. Hence, yoga is a universal system, a practical aid and a dynamic spiritual path unfettered by any religious dogma. A faithful from any religious orientation can practice yoga for his/her spiritual growth. The reason being, yoga practice sets as its initial goal developing divine, humane qualities as imperative to attainment of self- realisation. A person, slave to bad habits, ignorant of life's purpose and devoid of good character cannot even achieve human status though born as homo sapiens, what then to speak of attaining piety, salvation, Samaritan compassion, enlightenment or self-realisation. The ultimate goal of yoga is realising the atman, the pure, spiritual self or individual soul as part and parcel of the Paramatman (param= supreme, atman=soul), Supreme Godhead or Supreme Soul. In the state of samadhi or unwavering absorption in one's spiritual identity, complete union may be achieved with the Supreme, God willing. Noteworthy though is the fact that right from the beginning of serious yoga practice, starting with yama, the mind perceives its initial contact with atman. To the degree contact is established with atman communication with Paramatman is experienced to that extent. It is not required of the novice to wait until she/he reaches the state of perfection to take cognisance of the presence of the divine energy. In this respect, self-enrichment is simultaneously the path and the goal.
