Western Astrology

Western astrology is the most popular system of astrology all over the world. Western astrology is considered to be historically based on Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (2nd century AD), which in turn was a continuation of Hellenistic and ultimately Babylonian traditions.

Western Astrology is largely horoscopic in nature, that is, it is a form of divination based on the construction of a horoscope for an exact moment, such as a person's birth, in which various cosmic bodies have an influence. However, in the Western Astrology system, we use the 'Tropical Method' for calculations in order to cast a horoscope chart. The Zodiac is an imaginary ring in the sky which encircles our solar system like a girdle. And to determine the planetary positions on this circle, we need a reference point, which is a point that remains fixed while the heavenly bodies keep revolving around.

The Western Astrology system uses a fixed reference point and utilizes the equinoxes for calculations and other astrological purposes. Interestingly, 1st degree of Aries is the starting point of the Western Zodiac, quite like the Vedic Astrology or the Indian Astrology system. But the major difference between the two is that the position of the Sun on Vernal equinox (the first day of spring) is taken as the 1st degree of Aries. This works equally well because the Sun moves 360° in a particular given year. This is known as the ‘Tropical Zodiac’.

The planets and the house calculation system as per Western astrology are quite similar to that of Vedic astrology.
