This looks exactly like the mung bean but is black rather than green. It is astringent and sweet in taste, hot in potency and sweet in post-digestive effect. Being heavy, oily and strengthening, it cures vata, and 'quickly imparts virility'. It increases the quantity of faeces and is beneficial for nervous diseases and for cough and fever due to weakness. A medicated oil in which it and goat's flesh are the primary ingredients is used for treating muscular and nervous weakness and paralysis.
