The Indian version is Cinnamomum tamala, a cousin of cinnamon (C. Zeylanica). It is pungent and sweet, hot, and pungent after digestion. It reduces both vata and kapha and increases pitta, and is given mixed with cinnamon and cardamom for respiratory congestion. Its bark is sometimes used as an adulterant for cinnamon.
